Announcing the New ASEH-FHS Graduate Student Essay Prize
The American Society for Environmental History and the Forest History Society will award the ASEH-FHS Graduate Student Essay Prize for the best essay of journal-article length written by a graduate student on an environmental history and/or forest history topic. The prize will be awarded for five years, beginning in 2022. We are particularly interested in essays by members of groups that have been underrepresented in the fields and/or work dealing with underrepresented groups as their principal topic, but we welcome submissions from all graduate students.
The winner of the prize will receive $250 and the essay will be strongly considered for publication in the journal Environmental History, which has the right of first refusal. The winner will be selected by the journal’s editorial board, or a subcommittee thereof.
The editorial board may identify up to three additional essays with publication potential. The prize winners and the authors of any essays so identified will be known as Environmental History Fellows for the given year.
The journal editors and the ASEH Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (CODIE) will arrange an individual virtual workshop for each of the Fellows with established scholars to facilitate publication of the winner’s essay and other identified essays, be it in Environmental History or other journals. Fellows will attend and participate in all workshops.
Essays that have been previously published or are under review for publication will not be considered for this prize.
Applicants must be members of ASEH, FHS or ASEH-FHS joint members at the time of submission.
Deadline: November 20, 2022.Winners will be notified in February 2023.
Articles should be original research articles, grounded in historical research in primary sources, usually including archival sources, 8,000-9,000 words in length (including all note text). Please submit your essay as a PDF or MS Word document; to facilitate blind review, make sure that your name does not appear on your essay. THE FILE NAME OF YOUR ESSAY SHOULD BE YOUR ASEH OR FHS MEMBERSHIP NUMBER.
