What is Environmental History Week? Environmental History Week is an international celebration of environmental history, organized by environmental historians of all stripes to foster scholarly collaboration, academic research, teaching and public awareness of environmental history. ASEH invites you to organize an event in your community. | Is EHW 2023 separate from ASEH's annual conference? Yes. EHW 2023 will be a few weeks after the conference during the week of Earth Day 2023 (April 22). EHW will emphasize in person, locally-organized, public-facing events that will engage historians and researchers and teachers of all levels, professionals, students, practitioners, and the general public. ASEH hopes that each year EHW will inspire and activate people to celebrate and protect local institutions and environments. ASEH 2023 in Boston will take place in person March 22-26, 2023. Registration is now open for ASEH 2023. | What sorts of events can be affiliated with EHW? Environmental History Week events can take many forms. In person, face-to-face events could be all-day mini-conferences; environmental history lectures on a campus or at a public library or museum; student presentations at a student research symposium; film series with audience discussions; field trips or tours, or hands-on projects in collaboration with non-profits in your area; or a teacher training program for local K-12, community college, or graduate students. Digital events could be virtual conferences conducted on an online, video conference platform; streamed films with online discussions; self-guided field trips; or a virtual museum exhibit. Programs for all audiences are welcome. If you have other ideas for events, please share them. ASEH will review, list, and promote any submitted event that aligns with the mission, values, and ethics of the Society. Already planning an event for Earth Day 2023? Add it to the Environmental History Week. We will open the calendar for events in late January 2023. | Is there a minimum or maximum audience size needed for an EHW event? No, an event can be as large or small as you envision. |
What should I consider when organizing an event for EHW? Organizers planning new events should consider what they would like achieve with an event and, in turn, audience, venue, participants, cost, potential partners, and funding that will help make it successful. Contingency plans are also important in current conditions. We have put together a list of considerations that may help those planning an event, especially academic symposia. | When can I submit an event for the EHW Events Calendar? The Events Calendar opened to submissions in late January. Fill out this form to submit your event to the EH Week 2023 Events Calendar. Please join us by organizing an event in your area.
