Event Description
The Rio dos Macacos has its source in the Tijuca Forest, located in Serra Carioca, and crosses the neighborhood of Jardim Botânico to Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, in the south zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This river presents itself as a driver of knowledge and exchange of knowledge about sustainability. In this region which involves areas of the urban forest and densely populated neighborhoods, the Environmental Education Service of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro develops educational practices such as didactic itineraries and conversation circles that aim, mainly, at understanding the socio-environmental and cultural issues that directly impact the lives of people who live around Rio dos Macacos and attend the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute. The educational activities are built from a transdisciplinary proposal with the aim of awakening sensibilities and raising issues such as biodiversity and social justice. In this context, in a collaborative way, environmental education encourages the participation of the school community, residents, and public authorities that work in this territory to develop an awareness of the importance of preserving this water resource.
