Event Description
Art Exhibition and Reception Nancy Langston: Tipping Points--Lake Superior Paintings in a Time of Climate Change; Well-Read Raccoon, 221 Shelden Ave, Houghton MI, April 16-May 15, 2023. Reception April 21, 5-8 pm EST. Nancy Langston's paintings grapple with the unsettling contradictions of climate change and just transitions in the far north. Her art draws on her decades of environmental history research in the Lake Superior watershed, combined with visual explorations of the changing north. Lake Superior is among the fastest warming lakes in the world. Water levels are rising, ice is melting, forests are changing, and migratory wildlife are struggling to adapt. But these are still the places that we love, places that remain heartbreakingly beautiful even as they undergo massive transformation. The paintings in this exhibition ask viewers to contemplate what kind of world we will bequeath to future generations. How will future residents of northern watersheds look back at traces from our snowy world?
