Apply now for Travel Grants to ASEH in Pittsburgh!

The ASEH, in partnership with the NSF, provides a limited number of travel grants for graduate student, independent scholar, or recent PhD presenters at the annual conference. Please read the following information about eligibility and awards before applying. Applicants for other ASEH travel grants are eligible to apply for NSF grants.

Eligibility and Award Amounts

NSF requires that recipients:

  • be participating in the meeting (e.g. presenting a paper, chairing a session, being a commentator for a session, etc.)

  • be a graduate student, independent scholar, or recent PhD (a recent PhD is a degree received in the last five years)

  • be a U.S. citizen or enrolled in a U.S. institution

If an applicant does not meet all of these requirements, they are ineligible for the NSF Travel Grant.

If an applicant is a U.S. citizen but does not attend a U.S.-based institution, their citizenship needs to be verified. The application form does not collect this information and the ASEH will contact recipients  to verify.

Maximum awards are set at $750 for domestic travel and $1,000 for international travel.

Grant Fund Usage

NSF Grant funds can only be used for travel expenses to and from the conference. Travel during the conference is not eligible and will not be reimbursed. Lodging and hotel expenses are not covered by this grant and will not be reimbursed. Rideshare/taxi/public transportation from the conference location to your accommodation or a restaurant are not eligible and will not be reimbursed. Membership fees are not covered by this grant and will not be reimbursed.

Airfare should follow the Fly America Act guidelines. Essentially, all air travel funded by the federal government is required to use a "U.S. flag" air carrier service. Code share information can be found at: https://www.gsa.gov/policy-regulations/policy/travel-management-policy-overview/fly-america-act

Airfare will be reimbursed only if a Reimbursement form includes a receipt that includes airline name and proof of purchase (e.g., name and the last four digits of credit card). Itineraries are not sufficient and will not be reimbursed. Flight credits/point/miles are not eligible.

In the past applicants not using U.S. based airlines has been an issue so please emphasize this point (there are some limited exceptions listed on the same website). Flight credits are also not reimbursable and we have had to reject applicants who used flight credits.
